WHAT PLACES ARE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
Have you ever wanted to travel across Canada? It’s a bucket list item for many of us, whether we are Canadians, travelers to Canada or visiting business people or students.
Recently I wrote about my cross-Canada education resource Canada Road Trip, but I wanted to share one more thing with you: my Instagram page @Canada_Epic. This is one of my passions and hobbies – posting images on IG, whether they are my shots or specially curated shots by other Canadian photographers.
Though I have visited quite a few places, Canada is vast. Many of the photos I’ve reposted are of places I now have on my bucket list, and I hope to travel to them one day. Ideally that will be a road trip so I can spend as much time in each place as I want and have mobility to move about spontaneously.
CANADA STUDY VIA INSTAGRAM PHOTO GALLERIES
How can you study using Instagram you might ask? For one you can approach the task by either being a creator or consumer. When you post you consider your image and topic and hopefully you write something special for the caption. When you browse or view images you can think about the location and how the image makes you feel, and then read the caption carefully. It’s both an active and passive learning activity.
Use WH questions as a starting point. Consider…
Example questions: What am I looking at? What is this? Where is this? Who took this photo? How would one travel there? Would I like to visit? Why? When? For how long?
CONSIDERING PHOTOS AND PHOTOGRAPHY ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Are you a photographer? Do you enjoy photography? What can you learn from looking at photos and reading the photographer’s comments?
Some aspects to keep in mind: What were the light conditions? What settings did they use? Do they relate a story about their experience or offer any tips?
What is the bigger picture regarding time and place of the shot? Are there any social or political considerations? Are there any unusual elements to the caption? What hashtags were used?
Technical note: I have embedded some images here for you to look at. To view Instagram images you would normally require an account. While you can view IG on a desktop device people usually use their phone. (Posting photos is usually done only via your phone, unless you have special software).

Original caption: Harkening back to the morning when I woke up at a quarter to 5 to drive down to Peggy’s Cove to photograph the sunrise.
